Prayag means confluence of rivers. Devprayag (देव प्रयाग) is the confluence of river Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. River Bhagirathi originates from Gangotri and Alaknanda originates from Satopanth Glacier near Badrinath. Generally water of river Bhagirathi is clear and green in color whereas Alaknanda bears bit muddy color. After the confluence the river is called as the “Ganges River” or the “Ganga”.

According to Hindu Mythology it is confluence of another river called Saraswati. Saraswati originates from Mana Village near Badrinath. Devprayag is 80 kilometers from Rishikesh at a height of 1515 feet above sea level.
Devprayag is named on Devasharma, it is the place where he led his life. It the first confluence when you go to Uttarakhand Himalayas. It is considered as a sacred confluence and is a famous pilgrimage for Hindus. Devprayag is the merging of two heavenly rivers called Bhagirathi and Alaknanda.

The pundits of Badrinath temple lives here when the temple is closed. This place is important for Hindus as their most holy river Ganga gets its final name from here. At Devprayag there is a place called Baitalshila. It is believed that it cures leprosy when patient takes bath here.
